The Parents Christmas Memories

The blog hasn't seen much love for about a year now. I briefly interviewed our parents in December 2020 on their favorite Christmas memory over all the years.  I meant to write this back in December but time got away from me. Below is an attempt to relate those memories here for the group.

The first memory that came to mind for both parents was their first Christmas in California where they actually stayed. I'm not talking December 1980 when Tina is born on December 24th, to forever lose her birthday to Santa Claus. Mom spoke briefly about 1980 Christmas and how they drove home the day after Christmas and she is still bleeding from the birth and they were crazy to drive 12 hours with a 2 day old baby. I told them at least they didn't have to buckle anyone in the car, we could just roam about without a safety care in the world. No one could confirm if Tina had a car seat, they were pretty sure but hey its the 80s.

The Christmas that stuck out to mom  was 1981 Christmas in Santa Monica. Anyone who has lived in California with 3 young children understands real poverty because the cost of living is high and diapers aren't cheap. They didn't have a lot of money and mom who didn't want to move out here was sad to miss Christmas in Utah. She said  one day Dad came home with Christmas lights, the giant multicolored ones. (The large kind like the picture above, they were kept over the years and featured on 2282 back in the day.) She wasn't even sure how he had the money to buy them but dad said he just worked it out. He wasn't about to give up on the California dream, ok, I took liberties with that line, he didn't say that line. Dad actually said that he couldn't have his wife sad so he said, I'm buying lights and he just spent the money. So they had their first real California Christmas.

The second Christmas memory that both of them remembered was December 1985 and had to do with the Wooden Manger in the garage for so many years. I'm not sure its there anymore but I tried to put a picture above to help you remember. Ours was definitely a darker color brown and very dusty. I always wondered why they had this manager? Were these people just putting on so many living nativities over the years they just had the costumes and props ready at a moments notice? Turns out the manager was the start of Christmas tree inspecting for Californian Ericksons.

They would go to houses in the ward with the manger and put it on the front step and knock the door. At this point there was a disagreement among Mom and Dad and that was weather we put Luke in the manager or not? Mom said that they would leave it empty and they would ask Where is the Christ Child? and then they would ask to come in to find the Spirit of Christ in the home.

So this was before Luke, so now we are talking 1984 maybe, no one was solid on dates. We can attribute that to age or car accidents but I think its because our parents were raising kids in the 1980s and they can't remember a single thing that happened in that decade. When you are in the trenches people its hard to keep up with what's going on in the world. I mean they barely knew who Hall and Oates were and didn't discover them until Troubies in 1999. Thank you Romeo Hall and Juliet Oats!

Dad had a memory of putting Luke in the manager and singing Silent Night on the front porch. This is definitely the account of a secondary witness because I don't have notes so I have no idea what they would actually sing. I'm pretty sure he said Silent Night but its been 2 months from the interview and I have 4 children so my mind is shot. I am probably missing out on some great singing duo form this decade, just like our parents, I have no idea.

The last Christmas that they agreed was a fun time was 1995 because everyone was home for Christmas. They said it was fun to see everyone line up shortest to tallest, with Kaleb in Front, and we marched into the family room to open our presents together. I guess after that year there was always one person or another missing for Missions, Military, and family life. So anyways, thank you for reading my sketchy account of our parents favorite Christmas Memories. I hope everyone is living the dream out there!

Love,

Luke

P.S.

I spoke to the parents yesterday 2/6/2021 on this topic again just to see how wrong I got it and apparently I got it pretty wrong. So I guess historians are correct to not trust secondary witnesses, what do we know but lies. Corrections are as follows,

 1) Dad was the one who said we would put no baby in manager and Mom was the one saying we would put Luke in the manager and its still very much debated. They also confirmed that this was not the origin of Christmas tree inspection but was a variation added to the Christmas tree inspection events. Dad said they would put the empty manger on the door step and then knock on the door and wait. When the family would come out they would ask where is the Christ Child and then ask to see if we could find it in their home?

2) Mom said 1981 Christmas where dad bought outside Christmas lights he also bought an indoor Christmas Tree. She said she could remember it clearly because the Tree cost $49 and she honestly didn't know how they were going to afford that.

Kaleb's Lost World

Best Present Ever!

To:      Kaleb
From:  Santa

When Kaleb was a wee lad of seven or eight, he received a present on Christmas morning from Santa Claus.  It was a fabric play mat with hand-drawn pictures of swamps, and forests, and tar pits, and lush vegetation.  He also received a bag of plastic dinosaurs.  Real dinosaurs, you know, like Stegosaurus and Brontosaurs, and a T-Rex.  None of that feathered raptor nonsense kids play with these days.
Kaleb said this was one of the best presents he ever received, and he played dinosaur imagination games for years after that.  He suspects that Mom was the artist.

On the other side of things, one time Kaleb was planning to give a Christmas gift to a newish girlfriend.   He knew she liked "Guardians of the Galaxy" so he gave her a CD of the soundtrack from the movie.  She received the gift with smiles and gratitude.  It was a couple months later he learned she had never opened the gift because she had no way to play a CD.

Just wanted to keep the blog alive, my friends, and remember some of our shared past.

Interview with Kaleb 12/26/2018

(This is Kaleb and Mackenzie in Toledo, Spain 2018)

1.      What is a food that you really enjoy these days?
I have to be honest, just a McChicken with McDonald’s BBQ sauce. There is something magical about the combination of their BBQ sauce and the mayo on the sandwich. I know that sounds gross but it’s amazing. Plus, it’s only a buck, you can’t beat that.

2.      What musical artist are you listening to most these days?
I’m listening to a Jazz group called “The Seat Belts”. They were from a TV show that I started watching called Cowboy Bebop. It’s an animated show, if you are into that, go for it.

3.      What tv shows are you watching/wish you had time to watch?

I’m working on Fargo Season 2 but finals distracted me, so I’ve got to get back to it. I’ve recently started watching The Office because I feel like to fulfill the spirit of America I need to know the show.

4.      What’s the last movie you saw in a theater?
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas”

5.      What is something that you accomplished this year?
I got married and I left the country for the first time.

6.      Do you have any goals for the upcoming new year?
Yeah my goal is to finish grad school and find a new job. I’d like to leave the mortgage industry to slowly die on its own. I like to analyze data but I don’t want to do that for mortgages. I want to stop working in Santa Monica and have a shorter commute.

7.      Any parting words you’d like to share with the Erickson siblings?

“Pigeons, stop eating people’s old french fries. Don’t you know you can Fly?” – 30 rock

Interview with Eli 12/22/18

I managed to track down Eli and interview him today. He was very busy with Aubree's birthday party, but I managed to get 10 minutes from him.

1. What is a food that you really enjoy these days?
“I like, because I’ve been really enjoying it this year, monster cookies. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Nicole made a batch for some school project and you can never make just enough, you always have a ton of dough left over.”

2. What artist are you listening to most these days?
"We took the girls to see Walk off the Earth in November. So, leading up to November, we were focused on them, so that everybody was familiar with the songs. But if I’m alone in the car, it’s on talk radio. I’m listening to a Great Course on the beginnings of Judaism. When I listen to talk radio, it’s either NPR or a sports talk show called The Herd with Colin Calvert."

3. What tv shows are you watching/wish you had time to watch?
“I’m not watching any tv shows. I wish I could watch the Last Kingdom on Netflix. I saw the first two seasons and I’d like to check out the third that recently came out.”

4. What’s the last movie you saw in a theater?
“Nicole and I saw Robin Hood, which, you know, I have mixed feelings over. Because I hate to admit that I kind of liked it. But it could be that this was only the second adult movie that I’ve seen all year, so maybe I was programmed to like it.
With the kids, the last movie we saw was Smallfoot. I saw that with Lexi and Ethan. We also saw the Teen Titans Movie, which was excellent. I would recommend Teen Titans to everybody.”

5. What is something that you accomplished this year?
“We built the salon in our garage. Nicole has her own salon. As a matter of fact, we just screwed in the final handles today.”

6. Do you have any goals for the upcoming new year?
“Eat less monster cookie dough. I think that’s the new goal, even though it’s painful to say. See more movies. Connect with Karl for Thanksgiving.”

7. Anything you’d like to share with the Erickson siblings?
“Aubree is a teenager. Pray for me.” -Eli

Interview with Luke - 12/10/2018

Pictured: Luke in May 2017 at a Chick-fil-A grand opening. I know it's not a current picture, but it was all I had.

* Luke's responses are bolded in quotes
** I added links to specific references for easy followups by the reader

1. What is a food that you really enjoy these days?
"Definitely burgers."
Any burgers in particular?
"The Penny Whopper, ha."

2. What musical artist are you listening to most these days?
"Let’s see, I’ve been delving into some T.I. and Xzibit recently.
I’ve also been dabbling in stand-up comedy. I’d recommend Ricky Gervais’s special called 'Humanity'. It’s a bit of a slow start, but it’s really good."

3. What tv shows are you watching/wish you had time to watch?
"Narcos: Mexico is on my wish list.
On the other hand, I’m currently watching lots of movies: Peppermint (which was phenomenal), as well as Papillon, which is about a guy in the 1920s who escaped from a French prison. It’s like Sons of Anarchy but set in the 1930s and with much less male rape."

4. What’s the last movie you saw in a theater?
"Last movie I saw in theaters was Creed 2. I’m kind of ashamed to say it. It was terrible.
I thought the first Creed was decent, it brought something new but familiar to the genre. If that’s even possible. It had good moments.
Creed 2, I felt like - I don’t know. The music reminded of that Dave Chappelle sketch about crazy dancing making my penis soft; but about the music in the movie."

5. What is something that you accomplished this year?
"I got a Whopper for a penny."

6. Do you have any goals for the upcoming new year?
"See if I can get more Whoppers for a penny. Not much else."

7. Any parting words you’d like to share with the Erickson siblings?
“We used to fight aliens together. What happened to us?” - Luke
